Past the Point: Rapier voids, giratas and passes in defence and in the attack

Description: Many novices in Italian rapier seek to engage the opponent in a very linear manner, without considering the opportunities presented by stepping offline or by simply using body mechanics to move past the point.

This workshop will begin by examining how to use voiding to the side or under an attack to defeat the opponent. Students will progress to passing offline and thence to using attacks from retired guards. The workshop will finish by considering Salvatore Fabris’ use of mechanics in taking the fight to the opponent.

Requirements: Students should bring standard fencing equipment (jacket, mask, gloves and a box) and a rapier.

Introduction to Rapier and Cloak

Description: Today, the cloak is perhaps perceived as belonging to a Hollywood swashbuckler than a serious companion weapon, or at best a weapon of opportunity for a desperate encounter. However, sources such as Fabris, Alfieri and Dall’Aggochie show us that the cloak was a respected weapon to accompany the sword, requiring its own methodology and techniques. This workshop will introduce students to the cloak forms of Salvator Fabris (1606), taking them from the basic guards and defences, through to disarms and throws.

Requirements: Students should bring standard fencing equipment (jacket, mask, gloves and a box), a rapier and some form of cloak simulator. The cloak should not be made of a synthetic material and should be large enough that, when fully stretched out, it is wider than the shoulders and can reach from the neck to the feet. A large towel is ideal (there is no restriction on towel colour or pattern!).

Dall’Aggochie’s Single Sword

Description: In 1572, a text entitled Dell’arte di Scrimia by Giovanno Dall’Aggochie was published, following the Italian Dardi fencing tradition which has since become known as ‘Bolognese’. Overshadowed in modern practitioners’ eyes by the earlier Opera Nova dell’Arte delle Armi by Achille Marozzo (1536), or Antonio Manciolino’s Opera Nova (1531 or earlier), Dall’Aggochie provides a clear and concise introduction to the sidesword of the latter sixteenth century, a system that relies heavily on the cut, but which begins to reflect the rise in dominance of the thrust.

This workshop will introduce students to Dall’Aggochie’s lessons for the single sword, covering footwork, cut and thrust mechanics as well as some plays.

Requirements: Students should bring standard fencing equipment (jacket, mask, gloves and a box), and some form of sidesword simulator: a nylon waster will do, but no rapiers with blades over 38” / 96cm.

Duration: 2 hours +. This workshop can be extended and merged with the Dall’Aggochie’s Sword and Dagger workshop into a two day introduction to the Bolognese system.
