Fencing masters, the Hansa, the Landsknechts and the Teutons

While recovering from knee surgery I went a little crazy and started on a project I have been thinking of for some time. With the sun shining outside, this seemed like a good project to keep me busy. :)

So, I have created a few different maps showing locations related to fencing masters, the landsknechts, the Teutonic Order, and the Hansa. Some locations are highly speculative, but I find them pretty interesting, especially when overlapping them. Amongst other things, they show locations where Johannes Lichtenauer may have been born and where he may have been murdered, as well as where the mass was held after his death.

There is still a lot of work to be done, and I will add more locations eventually. I am also thinking of adding portraits of the fencing masters to the extent that such is available.

I would welcome any comments and suggestions. :)

Cool project, Roger. What have you read about JL being murdered?

Thanks Shay!

The part concerning Lichtenauer's death I found on another forum. I'll have too look it up, but it went something like this:

"So, in the years 1449-1451 a requiem was read at the monastery of Ursberg (in Swabia) for a Johannes from Liechtnouw, who was was murdered at Marchdorf on a September 16, the exact year is uncertain." -Necrologicum Ursbergense

EDIT:

Here is a link to the original discussion: http://forum.arsgladii.at/viewtopic.php ... sc&start=0 It is also discussed here: http://forums.swordforum.com/showthread ... erg&page=3

It seems as if Matt Galas was the one who found the reference.
EDIT END.

Parts of the original text goes:

"Iohannis de Liechtnouw occisi in Marehdorf et aliorum de Liechtnouw, quibus tenemur sollempne celebrare annivei-sarium."

It might be another Johannes of course, considering the date of the mass, but it is interesting nevertheless. The mass may have been held as a "celebration" at a much later date.

Nice!!! Roger I have found with Meyer, a whole other man, living simultaneously to the fechtmeister, but more digging, and i saw he was some kind of Priest or pastor, defintely not our Joachim. I really hope this is Johannes, hmmm Sept 16, i wonder if what Richard Cole of Stahl auf Stahl says, that the Marxbruder somehow celebrated or honored Liechtenauers death day during the Herbst Fest, in Frankfurt am Main, this fest is always on or abouts the 16th of Sept. Interesting.
