Lichtenau - Birthplace?

Post by Roger N » Thu May 20, 2010 11:05 am

As has been discussed previously there are many towns called Lichtenau in the German "region".
Here is one I find particularly interesting.

The nearby city of Ansbach was founded as a monastery in the second quarter of the eight century.
When exactly the town Lichtneau was founded I am not sure of, but Gottfried von Heideck inherited it
in 1288 at his father Wolfram von Dornberg's death. After various turns the town was sold in 1406 to
the Council of the City of Nuremberg. The whole town is wrapped around an impressive fort and includes
multiple surrounding fortifications, as can be seen in the images below. The fort is said to be built on
top of an older medieval water fort, but it might refer to the simpler fort in the pictures.

During the 30 years war it was captured in 1632 by the Swedish king Gustav Adolf, but it was recaptured in 1633.

Oh, and the local church is of course namned "St. George's Church"... :)

There is a bit to read here: http://www.wandern-und-geschichte.de/li ... anfang.htm

Here is the town's history described on its site: http://www.markt-lichtenau.de/ml_geschichte.html

And here is a map http://maps.google.se/maps?hl=sv&q=ansb ... CCYQ8gEwAA
Lichtenau is just south east of Ansbach. Straight south, about 70km, you find Augsburg.

http://maps.google.se/maps?f=q&source=s ... 2&t=h&z=17

I know where I will have to try to persuade my wife to spend our next vacation... :)

Here is an old post regarding the birth places of the masters on Swordforum. http://www.forums.swordforum.com/showthread.php?t=79531

I also have a vague memory that I posted about possible locations of Lichtenau earlier,
but I can't seem to find it... :P

Perhaps I am confusing it with this thread where I mention Doebringer and Golub-Dobrzyn: viewtopic.php?f=91&t=246&p=530#p530

And here are a few images. :)

In the old map below, what is east should be north, I believe, and judging from the "compass"
at the bottom left. The small canals have disappeared with time, and it seems as if the fort was
originally located near such a canal.

And to reconnect to the other thread regarding Poland, Schwabia, Golub-Dobrzyn (Dobrin) etc.
viewtopic.php?f=91&t=246&start=10

There is a Lichtenau (Lichnow) where the Suabis used to live, close to Gdansk and not very far from Golub-Dobrzyn,
where Dobringer might have originated from with only about 65km.

Going through Poland and the Czech Republic searching for Lichnow/Lichnau, there are a few places that sound
a little familiar to a Swede, like Bohuslavky, Bohunovice and Lanskroun. In Sweden we have Bohuslän and Landskrona...
No relationship from what I can tell, but funny still.

Here is a Czech Lichnow. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source= ... 7&t=h&z=13

Now, I know that the Lichtenau in the images above might not be the right one, but the odds are
fair that they actually are, and I have to admit that I get shivers looking at those and thinking that it
might actually be the home village of old Lichty... :D

Roger that is awesome to think about, his birthplace. If ya'all do vacation there, I can
recommend you try the Ansbacher Urqualt, it'll wreck you, but tastes excellent.
I lived in Stuttgart for three years. And travelled to Ansbach and the area quite a bit.
Rothenburg ob der Tauber, is as fascinating today as it was in the Medieval, shame i dont
remember Liechten. What was the religion of this area during a supposed year of Liechtenauers
birth? And have you read on the Stahl auf Stahl site, where Herr Richard Cole asserts that the
Marxbruder celebrated their Fallfestival, on Liechtenauers death date? have you ever read a
date for his death? I think its awesome you are doing this kind of research on Liechtenauer the
Man. He really was referred to by Meyer, and others, as the One High Master, much of Meyer
is taken from Leichtenauer. I'd love to get back there someday. This time heading straight for
various archives. I bet there's more about Herr Johannes, than we know. I know there is about Meyer
I think its great to freely and openly disseminate as much of this as we can. I've often wondered
about Liechtenauer, that a Man so Greatly considered by many to be a Master of the Longsword,
wouldnt have more written about him. Did he serve in any known Units? Has anyone ever seen
the word Freifechter and Liechtenauer together? I have considered that. Also that, he wasnt
in a Fencing Guild that we know of, they didnt exist like we think of them, Brotherhoods of a
Trade Guild, that went to War together, maybe. Unless he was a Knight in an Order of some Saint.
this was 1380's ? The Gesellschaft Liechtenauer was not an Order, as far as we know. That he belonged to
But that he influenced many other Masters of the Sword, there can be no doubt. For several hundred years
it was within this membership that included eventual Marxbruder Captains and Masters of the Long Sword?
This was 100 years after he lived, these students were still practicing his traditions. Paulus Kal, Peter Falkner
Andres Lignizter . Does anybody know was Pauernfeindt a Liechtenauer gesellschaft member?
This smacks of Joachim Meyer 100 years after these last students. Look at how long
Meyer was popular, he was re-published as late as 1660. And look at all who were influenced by him.
and all the plagiarizing post mortum, that had occurred.
I'm not comparing their Art this way, just the two share that commonality, Meyer and Liechtenauer.
To me the Two are inexorably tied together. So, therefore master Liechtenauer is of great interest to
me as well. Good stuff

I forgot to mention that my favourite Lichtnau candidate also make their own beer. We really should
get a few thousand bottles for the next Swordfish event. ;)

It looks good, doesn't it? :)

Btw, I just thought I would connect another related thread to this one.
I made Google maps inspired by the discussion in this thread, that tries to create a picture of possible relations between the Hansa, the Lansknechts
and the Fencing masters and schools. It's a work in progress though. Here it is:
